Some things need a hospital, not a dentist
Go to your nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, a suspected broken jaw, or a serious injury to the head or face. A hospital is equipped for those situations in a way that a dental office is not. Please don't wait to reach us first.
What counts as a dental emergency
If you are not sure whether your situation qualifies, call and ask. We would much rather talk you through it than leave you wondering at home.
What to do right now
Standard first aid while you are on your way to us. Call first if you can — with some of these, the timing genuinely matters.
A tooth has been knocked out
This is the situation where minutes count. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved within the first hour.
- Pick it up by the crown — the chewing surface — never by the root.
- Rinse it gently with water. Don't scrub it or use soap, and don't dry it off.
- If you can, put it back in the socket and hold it gently in place.
- If you can't, keep it in milk, or tucked inside your cheek. Never let it dry out.
- Call us on the way.
A cracked or broken tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces you can find.
- Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to keep swelling down.
- Avoid chewing on that side until we have seen it.
Toothache that won't let up
- Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently either side of the tooth — sometimes something is trapped there.
- A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can ease the discomfort.
- Don't hold aspirin or any painkiller against the gum — it can burn the tissue.
- Pain that keeps you awake, or comes with swelling or fever, needs to be seen. Please call.
A lost crown or filling
- Keep the crown if you still have it — it can often go straight back on.
- The exposed tooth may be sensitive to hot, cold, and air. Chew on the other side.
- Do not try to glue it back yourself. Call and we will find you a time.
